Grab bar blocking is structural reinforcement placed behind the finished wall. It gives an installer a solid anchoring surface wherever a grab bar may eventually be needed, including:

- Inside the shower
- Beside the toilet
It is easy to skip because it is invisible. Once drywall covers it, the homeowner cannot see any immediate benefit. It may be treated as an optional extra rather than inexpensive preparation for a home intended to remain usable for decades.
That reasoning is backwards. Blocking preserves options. The grab bars do not have to be installed today, but the house is ready when a temporary injury, a change in balance, or a long-term mobility need makes them useful.
2. Grab Bars: $150–$300 With Support or $800–$2,000 Without It
A grab bar is only as dependable as the structure holding it. When suitable blocking already exists, installing a bar may cost $150–$300 per bar. Without it, the work may rise to $800–$2,000 per bar because the installer may need to open and rebuild part of the wall.
This is why “we can always add it later” is technically true but financially incomplete.

The gap exists because a curbless shower is not merely a different shower door. It can affect:

Once tile, subfloor, plumbing, and waterproofing are complete, changing those systems becomes a genuine renovation. If a bathroom remodel is already scheduled, that is the moment to decide whether removing the threshold makes sense—even if nobody currently uses a mobility aid.

A 36-inch doorway can provide more usable clearance for walkers, wheelchairs, and caregivers assisting another person. It also makes everyday tasks such as moving furniture or carrying laundry easier.

The door itself is only part of the later expense. Widening a finished opening may involve reframing, drywall repair, trim replacement, paint, electrical relocation, or changes to nearby cabinetry. A load-bearing wall can make the work more involved.
Wider doors are commonly skipped because standard doors feel adequate to an able-bodied buyer walking through a floor plan. The limitation becomes obvious only when someone needs more clearance—and by then, the surrounding finishes are complete.
5. Elevator Shaft Rough-In: $2,000–$4,000 Now or $20,000–$30,000 Later
An elevator may sound excessive in a home where nobody currently needs one. An elevator shaft rough-in is a different decision: it preserves the space and structural path for a future elevator without requiring the elevator to be purchased today.
Planning that space during construction costs approximately $2,000–$4,000. Retrofitting a residential elevator later may cost $20,000–$30,000.
The unfinished shaft can often serve another purpose in the meantime, such as stacked closets, depending on the design and local requirements. The value is not that every owner will eventually install an elevator. The value is that the house retains an option that can be extremely difficult to create later.
This feature gets skipped because it competes with visible square footage. A closet, larger bedroom, or decorative upgrade feels useful on move-in day. Empty vertical space does not. But for a household determined to remain in a multistory home, preserving a future route between floors can be one of the most consequential decisions in the plans.

6. An Accessible Bathroom: A Floor-Plan Choice Now or $8,000–$25,000+ Later
An accessible bathroom is not one product. It is a coordinated layout that provides adequate clearance, a usable shower, a reachable toilet and sink, and enough room for the resident’s actual mobility needs.
During construction, much of that accessibility comes from the floor plan itself. After construction, a full wheelchair-accessible bathroom conversion can cost $8,000–$25,000 or more.
The cost grows when walls, plumbing, doors, cabinets, fixtures, and finished surfaces all need to move together. In some houses, the existing room is simply too small, so the project must take space from an adjacent room or alter the surrounding layout.
This is also where careless cost comparisons become misleading. An accessible bathroom conversion may already include a curbless shower, wider doorway, grab bars, and other work listed above. Those costs cannot honestly be added together as though every line were a separate project.
The Honest Savings Number: Five Figures, Not a Fake Grand Total
It is tempting to add every maximum in the table and advertise one enormous savings figure. Do not do that.
These improvements overlap. A full accessible bathroom may include the curbless shower, wider doorway, blocking, and grab bars. A main-floor living plan may reduce or eliminate the need for an elevator. Individual homes need different combinations.
The defensible conclusion is simpler: thoughtful aging-in-place planning during a new build or major renovation can realistically prevent five figures of later retrofit work. It cannot promise one universal savings total.

- Will you install and photograph grab bar blocking in every bathroom?
- Where will the blocking be placed around the shower, tub, and toilet?
- Can we specify 36-inch doors on the primary bedroom, bathroom, and main travel paths?
- Can this shower be built curbless now? What would the added cost be before waterproofing and tile begin?
- Does the bathroom layout provide enough clear floor space if mobility needs change?
- Can the home support main-floor sleeping, bathing, and laundry?
- If the home has multiple stories, is there a practical location to rough in a future elevator shaft?
- Which accessibility choices become substantially more expensive after framing, plumbing, or drywall?
- Can accessibility items be listed explicitly in the plans and construction scope?
- Who will verify them before the walls are closed?
Ask for decisions to be documented. For concealed blocking, request measurements and photographs before drywall installation. Years later, that record can tell an installer exactly where solid anchoring exists.

Most homes are not new builds, and missing the framing window does not mean the house cannot be improved. It means priorities matter more.
