Stair Lift, Elevator, or Move Downstairs? Comparing the Real Costs

This may be more resilient than relying on one piece of mechanical equipment, especially where the floor plan already has a room that can be converted. A dining room, office, or den may be cheaper to adapt than building an addition.
The catch is completeness. Moving a bed downstairs without a workable bathroom, clothing storage, privacy, and safe exit does not create a functional primary suite.
Main-Floor Laundry: The Smaller Change People Miss
A main-floor laundry project may cost $2,000–$8,000. In some homes, a hallway closet or part of a mudroom can accommodate compact equipment.
Laundry matters because the hazard is repetitive. Carrying a basket reduces the ability to use a handrail and blocks the view of the steps. Even if the resident can climb stairs, removing that task may reduce unnecessary trips.
